The Coca-Cola wordmark is a trademark of The Coca-Cola Company. Because the logo simply spells “Coca-Cola,” its original designer remains uncertain.
Some sources attribute the lettering to Louis Madarasz (1859–1910). He reportedly told a student that he created it. At the time, he ran a mail-order business, and his writing style closely matches the logo.
However, the book An Elegant Hand by William E. Henning credits Frank Mason Robinson, the company’s bookkeeper, with creating the name “Coca-Cola.” Robinson also specified that it should appear in Spencerian Script.
In a 1914 court case, Robinson stated that he was “practically the originator.” He also mentioned that an engraver named Frank Ridge contributed to the design.
As a result, the logo has no clearly defined authorship. Its exact creator remains unknown. Since the Coca-Cola logo appeared many times in the United States before 1923, it is no longer eligible for copyright protection.
